Joel Kimpela was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He moved to the United States at the age of 6 and was raised in Fort Worth, Texas. In high school he earned all-state honors in football. He received his bachelors degree from Georgetown University where he played played football and co-authored the devotional On Common Grounds. He and his wife, Kimberly and son Josiah live in Maryland.
